2019 Basket Range Cabernet Sauvignon, Adelaide Hills19-BAS-CAB
The Cabernet grows in the warmest aspect of the vineyard. That site gets a nice amount of afternoon sun. It is the first time we have also made a straight Cabernet Sauvignon and I think it shows how well-suited that variety can be for this part of the Hills, particularly in warmer years.

Basket Range Wines: incredibly well made wines from some of the oldest vines in the Adelaide Hills. Bigger, richer varieties such as Merlot, Cab Sav and Petit Verdot. Family run, now second generation, organic and all estate grown.
In 1978 Phil Broderick purchased a property in Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills and planted a number of Bordeaux varieties by 1980. A few years later he met now wife Mary and in 1992 and 1995 their sons Louis and Sholto were born.
With 4 decades of grape growing experience under his belt Phil has produced a number of his own wines from the vineyard, the family made ties with other like-minded producers such as Gareth from Gentle Folk by growing grapes for them (Gareth lives next door), Louis found himself working harvests in both France and Australia, and Sholto is now involved in all vineyard and winemaking work while also going through Roseworthy College (perhaps the most famous wine-focussed University in the Southern Hemisphere).
It's easy to fall in love with the family and the wines without even knowing the technical info, but there's so much to this vineyard and the wines that I should go a little further, so here goes: The vineyard is around 5 hectares at approximately 450m elevation. There's two aspects, basically North and Southeast. The slopes make for quite different wines and the soils are varied but mostly loamy red and blue clay over sandstone. There's bits of schist, ironstone and shale in their too. The vineyard is organic. They have Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cab Sav, Petit Verdot and even some Saperavi. Every Basket Range Wine is estate grown, organic, hand harvested, vinified on site, wild fermented, and bottled unfiltered and unfined. All are sound as a pound and you can drink and buy with absolute confidence.
